Key Achievements
· Completion of the current Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan for Hartlepool .
· The implementation of a 'Climate Action Campaign' to communicate what is being done, and what can be done to reduce our impact on the climate.
· Many successful schemes are being carried out to enhance biodiversity in Hartlepool as part of Section 40: The Natural Environment & Rural Communities Act 2006. Projects include:
· a pilot scheme for managing school grounds for bio-diversity
· grounds maintenance staff received training on managing for wildlife and wildlife and the law
· projects have been implemented to incorporate bio-diversity into road verges
· Bio-diversity projects are being implemented in three of the towns cemeteries
· Council landholdings have been surveyed for wildlife value
· several sites are managed to benefit wildlife, including Drakes Park and Seaton Carew.
· The School Environmental Action Initiative has provided targeted support for several schools in the town - increasing environmental awareness, engaging pupils and teachers in protecting and enhancing the environment and increasing the environmental sustainability of schools. It is hoped that this project will be further extended to cover all schools in the Borough.
· Pride in Hartlepool continues to encourage Hartlepool residents to get involved in improving their local area. The Annual Pride in Hartlepool awards were held in December 2008 with a record number of nominations received.
